Vaginismus
“Body says no, even when the heart says yes.”
Vaginismus is a condition where the muscles around the vagina tighten up without you being able to control it. This tightening can make any kind of vaginal penetration — like during sex, a medical exam, or inserting a tampon — painful, uncomfortable, or even impossible.
If this sounds familiar, please know that you are not alone, and this is not your fault. It’s not “in your head” — it’s a real, treatable condition that affects many women, often silently. Many women experience this, and the good news is that it can be treated with care and patience.

What Does Vaginismus Feel Like?
Women with vaginismus often describe:
- Feeling a strong tightening or squeezing sensation around the vaginal opening
- Pain, burning, or discomfort when trying to have sex or insert a tampon
- Difficulty or inability to have penetrative sex or to use tampons
- Feeling anxious, scared, or worried about penetration because of pain
- Avoiding sexual activity or medical exams due to fear of pain
- A sense that the vagina is 'closing up' or not cooperating
- Emotional stress or frustration because of these challenges
If any of this sounds like what you’ve been going through, please remember: this condition is common and very treatable.

Why Does This Happen?
Vaginismus is usually the body’s automatic way of protecting itself. The muscles tighten reflexively, often because of:- Past painful or uncomfortable experiences
- Anxiety or fear related to penetration or intimacy
- Physical issues like infections, inflammation, or childbirth recovery
- Stress or emotional factors that make relaxing these muscles difficult
It’s important to know that you are not “broken” or “doing something wrong.” Your body is responding in a way that once kept you safe, even if it’s causing frustration now.
